The writer Rene Bazin wrote about this region “nowhere is the laughter of the land more loud than in the beautiful countryside of the Saire Valley”. It has always been considered as a place blessed with its fertile land, its mild winter climate, its diverse scenery, its thriving ports and the generosity of the sea.
The inhabitants have, in the past, suffered the violence of numerous invasions. The Vikings, and later the English, landed frequently on the welcoming shores. There is no doubt that the fears engendered by the brutality of these diverse incursions explains the multitude of fortified farms and manor houses, solidly built from local granite.
